Review: Uruguay beat England, Colombia edge past Ivory Coast

After prolonged injury woes, Luis Suarez comes back to lead Uruguay to a 2-1 victory over England.

England stand on the brink of a early World Cup exit after Luis Suarez scored twice to give Uruguay a 2-1 victory in Sao Paulo.

- Jolly: Defensive shambles hurts England
- Mitten: Uruguay attack sinks England
- Brewin: Colombia provide entertainment
- Vickery: Falcao absence provides new options

Wayne Rooney looked to have snatched a draw for England after he equalised Suarez's first-half opener, but with five minutes left on the clock Steven Gerrard accidentally his Liverpool club-mate through and he beat Joe Hart to give the Uruguayans the win.

Only a minor miracle will keep England in the tournament now. If Costa Rica and Italy draw on Friday afternoon, or the Central Americans beat Cesare Prandelli's team, England will be eliminated with one match to spare.

If Italy won both their remaining games, Uruguay, Costa Rica and England will be tied for second spot, provided that Hodgson's men win their final match.

Colombia made it two wins out of two in Group C as they battled to a 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast.

After a first half notable primarily for Teofilo Gutierrez's fluffed attempt to put Colombia ahead on 28 minutes, the match burst into life in the second half.

As the game approached the hour mark, Max Gradel came close to capitalising on a defensive blunder but failed to get his shot away before, at the other end, Juan Cuadrado saw an effort tipped onto the crossbar.

Soon afterwards, Colombia did make the breakthrough as James Rodriguez powered a header past Boubacar Barry from Cuadrado's corner, and they swiftly made it two as substitute Juan Quintero rounded off a quick counter for his first ever international goal.

Gervinho reduced the arrears as David Ospina was unable to keep out his curling shot into the bottom corner, but the Ivorians could not force an equaliser.

Greece and Japan have their World Cup futures hanging in the balance after drawing 0-0 in a dour match in Natal.

After being reduced to 10 men after only 38 minutes when Kostas Katsouranis was shown a second yellow card for two desperate lunges, Greece played for the draw but in truth Japan rarely looked like breaking them down.

The closest Japan came was in the 68th minute when Atsuto Uchida played a fine ball across the face of goal to Yoshito Okubo, but he somehow blasted over the bar with the goal at his mercy.

Both teams only have one point and must win their final match to have any chance of climbing above Ivory Coast into second.
