"We beat the world champions and that's not easy to do," Juventus midfielder Vidal said in quotes reported by Chile's Asociacion Nacional de Futbol Profesional. It was a tough game.

"To become champions, you have to win all of your games and that is our objective. This team is poised for big things. We took a major step to reach the next round. We have a great team."

Barcelona star Sanchez is also hoping Chile can claim their first world title this summer.

"The mentality of our team has to be to come out to win," he said after the game. "I want to become champion and nobody can stand in my way of that. We had the motivation and the desire to accomplish something big and we were able to do so."

Juve's Mauricio Isla added: "We played against a great team, with players from the biggest clubs, but we were able to seize the advantage."

Chile now face Netherlands in their final group game looking to finish on top and secure a favourable draw for the round of 16, and goalkeeper Claudio Bravo said: "We have cool heads. We're going to take on our next opponent the same way we did today and come out to win."

The Real Sociedad man added: "We're happy and hope the Chilean people enjoy this win. We're very proud. This is a historic day for our entire country."

Chile boss Jorge Sampaoli said he was "extremely proud" of his team but warned that they would need to retain their focus.

"We have to go step by step," he said. "Now we are going to gear up for Holland."
