Queiroz to leave Iran after World Cup

Iran head coach Carlos Queiroz has stated his intention to leave his position at the end of this year's World Cup.

Carlos Queiroz has announced that he will step down from his role as Iran coach at the end of the World Cup.

Iran produced a strong defensive performance in their opening World Cup clash against Nigeria -- a 0-0 draw -- and still have a chance to progress into the knockout stages, with games against Argentina and Bosnia-Herzegovina to come.

However, regardless of how far his side go, Queiroz says he will be departing when their campaign comes to an end.

"I will end my relationship [with Iran] after the World Cup," Quieroz, who first took the job in 2011, said. "There was a moment when Iran proposed me to stay, and they still do show they want me here.

"But there is not enough support from the government, and it's clear this interest, in fact, is over. The dialogue is over, and I already decided that I am not going to stay."

Queiroz's preparations for the tournament in Brazil were fraught with problems -- struggling to get together enough first-choice players for a training camp, seeing friendlies cancelled and kits reportedly shrinking when washed were all issues he had to put up with.
