Wolfsburg step up chase for Morata

Morata is one of several players being chased by Wolfsburg.

Wolfsburg have stepped up their efforts to lure Real Madrid attacker Alvaro Morata to Germany, with club officials travelling to Spain to hold talks with him, local newspaper WAZ has reported.

The Bundesliga club return to Europe next season for the first time since the 2009-10 campaign and are chasing reinforcements including Morata, 21, for their squad.

Earlier this month, sporting director Klaus Allofs denied rumours that the club had already tabled a 28 million euros offer for Morata -- but did not deny interest in the player.

WAZ said on Monday that Allofs was among the officials who had travelled to Madrid to talk to Morata.

It claimed Wolfsburg had a good chance of signing Morata because Los Blancos would prefer to sell him to them and quoted Allofs as saying: "The players we have contacted have all not categorically ruled out joining Wolfsburg."

WAZ said those other potential candidates included Chelsea's Romelu Lukaku and Mexico international Raul Jimenez.

"We are now taking things to a new level. We try to present the club to our candidates so that they say yes," Allofs said.

"That's sometimes a difficult task, given the competition from clubs like Juventus, Arsenal or Dortmund."

While Juventus have also been linked with Morata, Allofs was referring to the 2012-13 transfers of Luiz Gustavo and Kevin de Bruyne.

Wolfsburg beat Arsenal to the signing of the Brazil international, while the Belgium midfielder was also linked with a move to Germany.
