De Gea injury worry for Spain

Join Roger Bennett and Michael Davies give their unique take on Spain vs. Netherlands, the marquee match-up on day 2 at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

David de Gea will miss Spain's training session on Sunday, amid speculation that the goalkeeper has been ruled out of his side's remaining World Cup group games with a hip problem.

Eurosport reported on Sunday that the Manchester United player was set to miss the Group B games against Chile and Australia as a result of the injury.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed later on in the day that De Gea, 23, has indeed sustained a muscle problem, although it said the player's progress will be monitored before a final decision on his fitness is made.

An RFEF statement read: "The international goalkeeper, David de Gea, will not take part in the training session of the Spanish national team in Curitiba [Spain's training base], due to muscular injuries.

"The medical services of the Spanish national team will see the day-to-day evaluation of the goalkeeper in order to determine David de Gea's physical condition.

"After running tests on David de Gea, it has been decided that he will not take part in the afternoon training session due to muscular discomfort in the gluteal region."

There have been suggestions that first-choice goalkeeper Iker Casillas will be dropped by Spain coach Vicente del Bosque for the rest of the World Cup following his poor performance in the 5-1 defeat to Netherlands.

De Gea, who only made his international debut earlier this month, had been tipped to take over from Casillas ahead of fellow goalkeeper Pepe Reina.
