Athletic Bilbao sign Segunda 'pichichi'

Athletic Bilbao have confirmed the signing of last season's Segunda Division top scorer Borja Viguera from Alaves for a fee reported to be around one million euros.

Former Real Sociedad youth-teamer Viguera, 27, scored 25 times for Alaves during the 2013-14 season, even as the Vitoria club struggled against relegation for much of the campaign.

Athletic were widely reported to have agreed a move the Logrono-born centre-forward through recent months, and the transfer was confirmed via a short statement on the Basque club's website.

"Athletic Club, Deportivo Alaves and Borja Viguera have signed, today Friday June 12, an agreement for the player to join our club," the statement said. "Viguera has signed a contract until June 30 2017 and his release clause will be 30 million euros."

While the fee was not confirmed by either club, AS say that Athletic have agreed to pay the one million euro release clause which was in Viguera's previous deal with Alaves, beating off interest from both Malaga and his former club La Real.
