Beiersdorfer seals Hamburg return

Dietmar Beiersdorfer has left his role as director of sport at Zenit St Petersburg.

Dietmar Beiersdorfer has been confirmed as the new chairman of Hamburg.

Beiersdorfer was originally the club's director of sport, but parted company with the Bundesliga outfit in 2009.

However, he will return at the start of July after reaching an agreement with current side Zenit St Petersburg over the termination of his role as director of sport.

"Today is a very special and emotional day for me," Beiersdorfer told Hamburg's official website. "After the exciting recent weeks, I am happy and proud to be able to help with the restructuring of Hamburg.

"All of the talks were very professional and I'm delighted by the great faith shown in me by the new advisory board.

"We are going to develop Hamburg with team spirit, passion, competence, professionalism and humility, and all Hamburg fans can be proud of their club once again."

Hamburg are in the process of rebuilding following the worst season in the club's history.

They only just avoided what would have been a first ever relegation from the top flight of German football by virtue of an away-goals victory over Greuther Fuerth in a relegation playoff.
