Josh McQuoid struck the only goal as Coventry moved into the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at the expense of Wycombe.

The Chairboys controlled most of the possession but the Sky Blues had the better chances as they ensured they go into their return to the Ricoh Arena against Gillingham on Friday on the back of a win.

Coventry came very close to breaking the deadlock when Danny Swanson played in Mohamed Coulibaly, who slid his shot beyond Matt Ingram only for Aaron Pierre to clear off the line.

Wycombe had another escape two minutes before half-time when McQuoid cut inside from the left before sending his strike against the crossbar.

The Sky Blues finally went ahead after 66 minutes as Swanson found Danny Pugh down the left and his excellent cross was lashed in at the back post by McQuoid.

The hosts pressed hard for an equaliser and they came within a whisker of one when Pierre thumped a header from Danny Rowe's corner against the bar.
