Las Palmas sack Paco Herrera as manager, hire Quique Setien

Paco Herrera's side collected just five points in eight games this season.

Las Palmas have sacked coach Paco Herrera following their 4-0 loss to Getafe on Sunday and hired Quique Setien as his replacement.

Herrera guided Las Palmas to promotion last season as they beat Real Zaragoza in the playoffs having finished fourth in the Segunda Division standings.

However, Las Palmas have strugged in the top flight, taking only five points from their opening eight matches, with their sole victory a 2-0 win over Sevilla on Sept. 23.

That has left them second from bottom in the table and after Sunday's rout, the club chose to act.

"Las Palmas thank Paco Herrera for his dedication, professionalism and warmth from the day he first took charge of the team," the club said in a statement.

Later on Monday, Setien was named as his replacement, with an introductory news conference scheduled for Tuesday.

"Las Palmas and Quique Setien have reached an agreement by which he will coach the team for the rest of the season with a further option based on performance," a club statement said.

The 57-year-old Setien, who played three times for Spain, began his coaching career with the club he was most closely associated with as a player -- Racing Santander -- and guided them to promotion.

But he left soon after and has primarily coached in Spain's lower divisions since, with spells at Poli Ejido, Logrones and Lugo either side of a brief spell with Equatorial Guinea.

In what proved to be Herrera's last game in charge on Sunday, Las Palmas found themselves 2-0 down inside 11 minutes against Getafe as Victor Rodriguez and Pablo Sarabia struck early, before a late brace from Stefan Scepovic added an extra gloss which will not have helped the coach's cause.

We must apologise for the bad performance,'' defender Aythami Artiles said. "Within 10 minutes of the game we have been taken apart by individual mistakes. Mistakes in the Primera Division condemn you."
