LA Galaxy's Robbie Keane likely to miss Red Bulls clash

LA Galaxy striker Robbie Keane, who has missed two matches with a groin injury, will likely sit out Sunday's game vs. the undefeated New York Red Bulls (5 p.m. ET, ESPN2/ESPNDeportes/WatchESPN), according to a report.

"I had a little setback," last season's MVP told MLSSoccer.com. "I thought [I'd be back] this week, but it's a [tender] area. It's where you kick the ball."

Keane was injured in the April 4 loss to the Whitecaps. Although he trained in full this week, he wasn't active during Thursday training at StubHub Center and said afterward that he wouldn't be available.

The LA Galaxy, who have had 11 players sidelined during the course of the first month and a half, are returning to form as Jose Villarreal also returns from injury.

"It's been good to find out how deep you are when you have these injuries, and guys can step up and get the opportunity that they're waiting for, and it just feels great that we still go out there without Robbie Keane and Gyasi [Zardes] and still get results," said Omar Gonzalez.

According to the league's website, Leonardo is ready to play after missing 3 1/2 games with a quadriceps injury as is Edson Buddle, who has been out with a hamstring strain. Mika Vayrynen also said he is recovered from a calf injury and defender Todd Dunivant (bruise above left knee) is aiming for a May 2 return vs. Colorado.

Jose Villarreal aggravated a hamstring injury in Wednesday's U.S. U-23 win over Mexico.

"I just felt it tighten up, and I just prevented it from getting worse. It's no big deal," Villarreal said. "It might have been a little too early to get back on the field, but I felt fine training these past few days, so it's no big deal."

Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena was coy about whether Keane would play vs. New York.

"Do I see any chance [he'll be available Sunday]? Did you see 'Dumb and Dumber'?" he told the league's website. "'You said there's one in a million?' And he said, 'Yes!' "

Left-back Robbie Rogers admitted the match vs. the Red Bulls, who have allowed a league-best four goals so far this year, would be challenging.

"Robbie just brings a little class to, especially, our attack, finishing plays off and creating space for himself and others," Rogers said of Keane. "The final pass. The goals, obviously. And just the leadership of he's played in so many big games, so he brings some composure at times when we need it.

"It's tough without him, but I think that the guys have done really well. At times it hasn't been as pretty as usual, but when you have this many injuries early in the season, you have to fight through these things and just win games. So I'm proud of the way everyone's done it."
