Dennis Lewa: Thika United captain killed in road crash

Thika United captain Dennis Lewa has been named as one of the victims of a road traffic disaster which took place in Kericho, Kenya on Wednesday morning.

The accident, involving a 62-seater bus containing 71 passengers, claimed 56 lives according to the Standard.

The defensive midfielder, formerly with National Super League (NSL) side Coast Stima is a former Kenya beach soccer team, and was named among the victims on Thursday.

His last assignment with the national team had been in 2016 against Ghana's Black Sharks, as Kenya failed to qualify for 2017 AFCON Beach Soccer.

"Football Kenya Federation wishes to express its heartfelt condolences to the family of former Thika United defender Dennis Lewa who passed on in a road accident that claimed more than 50 lives, in Kericho," read a statement on the FKF's official Twitter handle.

"Our thoughts and prayers are not only with the family of Dennis, but also with those of the other victims, whose vibrant lives were cut short.

"May you all find solace during these trying times."

Lewa was reportedly traveling to Kakamega County where he was expected to complete a transfer to Kenyan Premier League side Kakamega Homeboyz FC from relegated Thika United [as per The Star].

Former Kenya women national team defender, Terry Ouko, who was Lewa's personal friend, mourned his passing.

"His death is a shock, he's someone I have known for a number of years, he was a friend, we trained and played together a while back in Mombasa," the former Harambee Starlets defender told KweséESPN.

"I would like to send my condolences to his family and friends, may his soul rest in eternal peace."
