Kenyan authorities launch investigation into Kericho gun drama

The Kenyan Premier League has launched an investigation into an incident where a fan allegedly brandished a pistol just after the league match between Zoo Kericho FC and Bandari FC on Sunday at Kericho Green Stadium.

Trouble started when a police officer who was among the Zoo Kericho fans confronted Bandari players after the heated match, which ended in a 1-1 draw, as relayed by Goal.

He was pushed to the ground by one of the players and tried to reach for a pistol that was tucked in his waistband.

A Bandari official restrained the officer before he was whisked away, and the league management committee has now launched an investigation into the incident.

"[The] Kenyan Premier League wishes to inform stakeholders and the general public that it has launched investigations into an unfortunate incident involving a person alleged to be a law enforcing officer and players of Bandari Football Club which happened at the Green Stadium, Kericho on Sunday, September 16, 2018 after the Zoo vs Bandari SPL 2018 Round 30 match," the statement began.

"As we proceed with our review of the circumstances which led to the occurrence of this regrettably sad incident, we assure stakeholders and the general public that we remain steadfast in ensuring safety and security of players, match officials, technical bench officials, and matchgoing fans during matches played in various venues across the country."

The league managers added that they would write to the Kenya Police Inspector General - Joseph Boinet - to seek action against the officer.

"KPL will verify the facts of the incident and apply the relevant rules firmly and fairly in order to preserve the integrity of the game," the statement concluded.

"In addition to that, we will write to the Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service to look into the matter further with the aim of ensuring that this does not happen again as all licensed gun-holders are under his jurisdiction."

It's not the first time that a gun incident has been witnessed in the Kenyan Premier League.

In 2016, during a Kenya Premier League match between AFC Leopards and Ulinzi Stars, a military officer who was among the latter's fanbase brandished a gun when fans pelted objects onto the pitch.

In that instance, the KPL didn't take action against either the offender or his club, although Leopards lost the match - which was eventually abandoned - and were deduced a further three points due to crowd trouble.
