Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini sidelined again with thigh injury

Giorgio Chiellini will miss Juventus' Champions League tie with Lyon on Wednesday and the Serie A trip to Chievo on Sunday after picking up a thigh injury in the weekend's 2-1 win over Napoli.

Chiellini, 32, who had only just returned to fitness, is also set to miss Italy's World Cup qualifier in Liechtenstein on Nov. 12 and the repeat of their Euro 2016 quarterfinal against Germany in Rome three days later.

"This morning also saw Giorgio Chiellini undergo medical tests which revealed that the defender had sustained a severe knock to the posterior region of his right thigh in an incident which caused him to be withdrawn after 40 minutes of Saturday's 2-1 success against Napoli," read a statement on Juventus' official website. "Chiellini is expected to return to action after November's international break."

Italy coach Gian Piero Ventura will announce his squad for the two November fixtures on Sunday, but Chiellini -- who missed Juve's trip to Lyon a fortnight ago, as well as two Serie A fixtures and international games against Spain and Macedonia due to a similar muscular injury -- is unlikely to be available for consideration once again.

Chiellini has started eight of Juve's 11 Serie A games this season. Medhi Benatia is likely to stand in for him, alongside Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Barzagli.
