Juventus finishing top of Champions League group not essential - Allegri

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri has said he would settle for second place in his side's Champions League group, although taking a chance on Sevilla losing at Borussia Monchengladbach and aiming just to avoid defeat to Manchester City on Wednesday night is not an option.

The Bianconeri are in a position where even defeat at the Juventus Stadium would suffice to see them through to the last 16 along with City, if Sevilla lose in Germany.

Any other result at Borussia Park would see Juve's fate decided in their final game of the group stage in Spain, and Allegri would rather not have to go there needing to get a result.

"It's an important game because it could influence who comes first in the group," Allegri said at a news conference in Turin. "We've got to aim to win tomorrow as it's the only result that guarantees us qualification.

"Our aim from day one was to win the group, but just qualifying would still be a great result for us. If we don't get a win, then we'll be reliant on Sevilla's game at Monchengladbach, but we've got to aim to play 95 minutes the way we have to do, aware we're up against one of the strongest sides in Europe."

Juve picked up a 2-1 win at the Etihad earlier this season, when things were not going all that well in the league. Now, with their form picking up in Serie A, they need to deliver in Europe.

"I think we've done well in the Champions League so far, but let's not forget we have two games left against our main rivals Manchester City and Sevilla," Allegri said. "We've not done anything in the Champions League yet, because we've still got a battle with Sevilla to come so it's all wide open."

While Juve have started getting things right domestically, City are reeling from a 4-1 defeat at home to Liverpool which saw them dislodged from the top of the Premier League.

That result could be a dangerous one for Juve, according to midfielder Claudio Marchisio, who fears a backlash at the Juventus Stadium.

"It's not going to be easy because, as we've seen, there can always be big surprises," he said. "We face a City side who suffered a heavy defeat in the league and this could create more problems because when you lose like that in the league, you are even more motivated to prove yourself in Europe."
