Juventus confirm Anelka capture

Juventus have confirmed the signing of Nicolas Anelka on a six-month contract with the option of a further year, and the striker is already targeting Champions League glory.

Nicolas Anelka could join Juventus on a six-month deal
Italy is the latest destination for French forward Nicolas Anelka, after he completed a move to Juventus

Anelka, 33, leaves Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua to join the Serie A champions as they bid to retain their league title.

A statement on the club’s official website said:  “Anelka is a Juventus player. His contract, which runs until June 30, has been submitted to the league.

“The agreement includes the option to renew the deal until June 30, 2014.”

Anelka underwent a series of medicals in Turin last week but the deal was not ratified until Friday morning.

"I believe a team like Juventus has the players, mentality and athletic qualities required to [win the Champions League]," he told Juventus' official website.

"We'll give all our strength and energy to bring the trophy home. It's a very difficult competition. When you start out you never know if you'll be able to win it, but you still need to go for it all the same.

"I've joined a great club with great players. I'm happy to be here and to share these moments with them, and I'm very proud to be able to wear this shirt.

"[My former France team-mates, such as Lilian Thuram and David Trezeguet] have spoken to me about it [playing at Juventus]. They've told me it's a great club and it's like a family.

"When I arrived, I got that feeling straight away. When I walked into the dressing room, they all gave me a warm welcome and made me feel at home.

"Italian football is renowned all over the world. It's a league with great players, very physical and combative, as the current table suggests. I'm here to help last year's Scudetto winners reclaim the title."

Juve becomes the 10th club of a career which has seen Anelka rack up estimated transfer fees of almost £85 million, while also scoring 14 goals in 69 caps as a full international for France.

He was part of their victorious Euro 2000 squad and has won the Champions League with Real Madrid, Premier League titles in England with Arsenal and Chelsea and in Turkey with Fenerbahce, and three FA Cups, two with the Blues and one with Arsenal.
