Juve admit Drogba interest

Juventus director general Beppe Marotta says any move for former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba will have to be “compatible with our finances”.

Drogba, 34, left Chelsea after winning the Champions League in May and is currently under contract with Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua. As Juve step up their search for a regular goalscorer in the January transfer window they have been closely linked to the Ivory Coast striker.

The Bianconeri have scored more goals than any side in Serie A yet their leading scorers – Sebastian Giovinco and Fabio Quagliarella – have netted just six times in the opening 19 games of the season. In an interview with Domenica Sportivo claimed initial contact had been made but the interest had gone no further.

“You always make enquiries for players and we have done,” he told the TV show. “We have noted his availability but now we will have to verify whether he would be compatible with our finances, then we’d speak to boss Antonio Conte.”

Juventus have been linked with the player since he left Chelsea in the summer but are believed to be close to a deal for Spanish international Fernando Llorente whose contract with Athletic Bilbao expires this summer. Reports suggest the Basque club are loath to release the 27-year-old early, a decision which has prompted the rekindling of interest in Drogba.

Marotta also firmly ruled out a move for Fiorentina’s highly-rated attacker Stevan Jovetic despite admitting an admiration for the 23-year-old.

“He’s a great player, one certainly of interest,” Marotta said. “He’s a great talent with a future seeing his age and his qualities. However, we have never really been in concrete negotiations with Fiorentina for him and we don’t intend to at this moment in time.”
