Marco Verratti to miss Euro 2016 for Italy after surgery on groin

Italy midfielder Marco Verratti will miss Euro 2016 after surgery to repair a groin injury, his club Paris Saint-Germain confirmed on Friday.

The 23-year-old was first injured in February, though he returned to play two games as a substitute last month.

However, he left training on Wednesday and is now set to have an operation on May 16.

He will be sidelined for eight weeks during his recovery, making him unavailable for Antonio Conte's squad in France, where he had been a candidate to start for the Azzurri.

"Paris Saint-Germain wishes the player a speedy recovery and hopes he will soon be fully fit and back to his best for both club and country," a club statement said.

For PSG, Veratti will miss the final three games of the Ligue 1 season, where the Parisiens have already secured the title, as well as the Coupe de France final against Marseille on May 21.
