Giacomo Bonaventura withdraws from Italy squad due to flu virus

AC Milan midfielder Giacomo Bonaventura was left behind in Italy on Monday due to a flu virus as the rest of the Azzurri squad travelled to Munich ahead of the game against Germany.

Bonaventura, who was expected to play a part in Italy's latest friendly after sitting out Thursday's 1-1 draw against Spain, was sent back to Milan after failing to shake off the fever which has laid him low since Friday, according to an Italian Football Federation statement.

His absence increases the chances of Fiorentina's Federico Bernardeschi making his first start for the Azzurri on Tuesday in a three-man attack also featuring Juventus' Simone Zaza and Napoli's Lorenzo Insigne.

After seeing his 3-4-3 formation impress against Spain, Italy coach Antonio Conte is set to take a closer look at that system with different players at the Allianz Arena, with Eder, Antonio Candreva and Graziano Pelle all making way and starting on the bench.

With Bernardeschi and Bonaventura both rivals for a place in Conte's final squad selection for Euro 2016, the illness is a setback for the Milan midfielder.

After Tuesday's game, Italy have only two more matches before heading to France, although only one of those -- against Scotland in Malta on May 29 -- comes before Conte must submit his final squad selection.

Conte's final 23-man squad then host Finland in Verona on June 6, before moving to their Euro 2016 base in Montpellier two days later.
