Italy coach Giampiero Ventura hails clubs for giving youngsters a chance

Italy coach Giampiero Ventura has said he is pleased to see the number of young Italian players being given a chance in Serie A.

Ventura has been visiting all the clubs in the Italian top flight to discuss his plans for the future of the national team.

And after a trip to Crotone, he told the club's official website it was important that clubs put faith in young Italian players and made his job easier.

"At Euro 2016, we had the oldest national team of the past 30 years," the coach said. "Yet we had young players who were and who are blossoming.

"We are going through an historic generation change internationally and we needed to let the clubs and their coaches know what we wanted to do, or see more of young players who maybe would not have the possibility of wearing an Italy shirt by inviting them to train.

"The fact alone that there are clubs in Italy who are starting to field more and more young Italian players is an important signal, and we hope to draw benefits from it."

Ventura took a closer look at some younger players at a training camp late last year, and will hold another camp at Coverciano next month.

Since he replaced Antonio Conte in charge of Italy last summer, players such as Roberto Gagliardini, 22, and 19-year-old Manuel Locatelli have been given a chance in a younger Azzurri squad.
