A study that attempted to show that Serie A players earned less than MLS players was incorrect.
The study, as cited by ESPN FC and other outlets last week, claimed that more players in MLS earned over €100,000 ($105,769) per week than in Serie A.
However, the study attempted to compare the gross (pre-tax) salary figures released by the MLS players' union with the net (after tax) salary figures reported in a survey from Italian newspapers Gazzetta dello Sport and Panorama.
After converting the Serie A figures to gross using Italy's top tax rate of 43 percent, there are at least 34 players in the league earning more than €100,000 per week gross.
The official figures from the MLS union show there are only seven players in MLS earned more than $5.5 million in 2016, or €100,000 per week gross, and two of them -- Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard -- recently retired.
The study was also incorrect in saying that Juventus' Gonzalo Higuain was the world's 47th-highest paid player at €148,000 per week net. His estimated gross wage of €295,000 per week would put him in the top 10, ahead of both Bayern Munich's Philipp Lahm and Orlando City's Kaka.
Five Serie A clubs have two or more players who earn at least €100,000 gross, not only Juventus, who have 13 players over that level, not the two that the study reported using net figures.
Therefore, the figures do not confirm a reported economic decline in Serie A, though the league still faces limited revenue growth when compared to other European leagues.
