AC Milan boss Vincenzo Montella says Roma were 'luckier' in Serie A win

AC Milan coach Vincenzo Montella says his players are still "on track" despite being hard done by Monday's 1-0 defeat to Roma.

M'Baye Niang missing a penalty for Milan before Radja Nainggolan's winner in the 62nd minute.

But Montella said the Milan target of qualifying for next year's Europa League was still intact with the club in third place.

"Milan played well," Montella told Premium Sport. "We do not deserve the defeat. Today, Roma were luckier.

"We are on track and we are competitive, so I'm sorry for my boys, but we believe in them and are confident in what they can do, [but] they are just missing a little experience.

"With a victory in the next game, we will have a foot in the Europa League.

"Our goal is at least the Europa League, because we have been missing from Europe for two or three years."

Roma boss Luciano Spalletti said it was good to have a victory heading into a showdown with Juventus, whom they trail by four points, while also praising the effort of Milan.

"It was a muscular and consistent second half. Last season we did win a few games too, but tonight was really difficult and Milan were impressive," Spalletti said. "What people say of Milan and their Coach is true - they are at the main table and we have to expect them there to the end.

"It's true they started out under the radar and without the most prestigious names, but their approach of football playing from the back and then flying into spaces, which is what happened on the penalty, then we did really well to bring home a win.

"Juventus are a very strong side indeed. We first of all have to recover from the strain of tonight, see what happened to Bruno Peres and keep the team balanced, because when Juve have half a chance they score."

Spalletti said Peres would go to hospital for tests after leaving the game injured just before half-time.
