Vincenzo Montella and Pioli praise teams after 2-2 Milan derby draw

Both Vincenzo Montella and Stefano Piolo were full of praise for their clubs after a 2-2 draw in the Derby della Madonnina on Sunday night.

Suso netted a brace for Milan while Antonio Candreva was on the score sheet for Inter before Ivan Perisic netted a 92nd minute equaliser to snatch a point.

"Seeing the opposition celebrate a 95th-minute equaliser [Perisic scored in the 92nd minute] as if they had won, considering this is a team constructed to win the Scudetto, is something to be proud of," Montella told Mediaset Premium.

"We ask so much from our lads, so a dip in concentration can happen every now and then.

"I was sorry for them, but we can go home and sleep soundly with a smile because we put in a great performance and showed great spirit.

"Inter scored their goal on a set play at the 95th minute. It was almost the perfect evening and I try to see the glass half full.

"In the second half we started well and were superior, but Inter equalised on two fortuitous chances. Maybe Inter didn't deserve to lose either, but if Milan had won then nobody could have claimed we didn't deserve it.

"The president [Silvio Berlusconi] supported us after the match. He was a bit disappointed, just like us, but he's satisfied about the Milan we are building. A young and Italian Milan."

Despite Montella's claims that his team were superior in the contest, new Inter coach Pioli, who replaced Frank de Boer, insisted that his players deserved a point for their strong showing.

"I don't think we deserved defeat considering the performance, but we still have to improve in many areas," Pioli said.

"I tried to give some balance to the team. We allowed a few too many counters in the first half because the preventative marking wasn't always done correctly.

"We needed organisation and balance. I asked the team to put in heart and soul, which I think the boys did tonight."

The draw left Milan in third place behind Juventus and Roma while Inter are languishing in ninth place.
