Riccardo Montolivo hits out at schadenfreude after suffering injury

Italy and AC Milan midfielder Riccardo Montolivo has thanked everybody who has sent him messages of support after he tore knee ligaments while on international duty.

Montolivo, 31, has also hit out at those who have taken pleasure in his misfortune after he suffered the injury in Italy's 1-1 draw with Spain last Thursday.

A number of fans took to social media to rejoice in the news, including many AC Milan supporters who have booed and jeered him during some of their club's games in Serie A.

The midfielder has nevertheless received more messages of support and he wanted to address these first and foremost.

"Thanks from my heart to all of the people who have spared a thought for me... fans, colleagues and staff," Montolivo wrote on his Facebook page.

"It was nice, in such a difficult moment, to receive so many messages of support and affection.

"And my love also goes out to all those who have wished that I break my tibia and fibula, all of my ligaments and death... I hope that life succeeds in making you grow and educates you to respect human beings. RM."

Montolivo is facing six months out after suffering the injury during a challenge with Spain's Sergio Ramos.

Montolivo missed Euro 2016 due to an injury he picked up immediately before coach Antonio Conte named his final squad. Then like now, opinion was divided with many expressing relief that he had been ruled out.

The Milan captain has been a regular for the Rossoneri under Vincenzo Montella this season, starting every game in the league and being substituted only once, in the 4-3 win over Sassuolo last time out.
