Cagliari beat Sampdoria after keeper howler; Atalanta thrash Crotone

Federico Melchiorri took advantage of a goalkeeping error by Emiliano Viviano to score a late winner as Cagliari beat Sampdoria 2-1 in Serie A.

The substitute striker rolled the ball into the empty net two minutes from time to inflict a fourth successive defeat on the visitors after Viviano missed his kick when attempting to clear the ball.

Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes looked to have earned Sampdoria a point two minutes earlier when he emphatically fired a low shot past Cagliari's substitute keeper Rafael after being played in on the right by Ricky Alvarez.

Brazilian midfielder Joao Pedro opened the scoring in the first half at Stadio Sant'Elia, volleying in from close range following Simone Padoin's strong run and cutback from the left.

Alejandro Gomez scored a spectacular 25-yard drive as Atalanta beat Crotone 3-1 to extend the bottom club's winless start to the season to six games in Monday's earlier game.

Andrea Petagna stroked in the first after cutting inside from the right in the third minute before Slovenian Jasmin Kurtic took advantage of a mistake by Crotone keeper Alex Cordaz to chest home Remo Freuler's corner five minutes prior to the break.

Argentinian Gomez then scored the pick of the goals, rifling into the top right corner from distance in time added on at the end of the opening period.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men in the 62nd minute when Ivorian Franck Kessie was shown a straight red card for a late tackle on Noe Dussenne before Crotone grabbed an 86th-minute consolation through substitute Simy's close-range finish following Diego Falcinelli's flick-on.
