Empoli's Marco Giampaolo: I've missed the train on AC Milan job

Empoli coach Marco Giampaolo says he has "already missed the train" for the AC Milan job, amid rumours he is on the list of candidates to take charge of the Rossoneri next season.

Milan have dropped from sixth to their final position of seventh in Serie A since Brocchi took charge and they will miss out on European football for a third straight season if they fail to beat Juve in Rome.

Giampaolo, who announced prior to Empoli's 2-1 win over Torino at the weekend that he will be leaving the Tuscan club this summer "so as not to ruin the relationship I've got here" has been tipped as one of the candidates to replace him, but while he would be available, he does not see the opportunity arising.

"That train's already passed, and maybe you arrive too late and miss it," he told Sky SportĀ

"It's an honour to be linked with Milan, but it's nothing more than that. I've not heard from anybody about it."

The 48-year-old has boosted his chances of being considered for the job in what he claims has been his best ever season.

The much-travelled coach, who has also worked at Cagliari, Siena, Catania, Cesena, Brescia and Cremonese, guided Empoli to 10th place in Serie A.

"This is the best team I've ever coached," he said. "We had so much quality. So yes, it's been the best year of my career. We were courageous without ever abandoning our philosophy."
