Higuain helps Napoli to second; Juventus lose; Roma ease to victory

Gonzalo Higuain struck his 33rd league goal of the season as Napoli moved back into second place in Serie A with a 2-1 defeat of Torino at Olimpico Grande.

Despite being overtaken by Roma earlier in the day, Napoli showed no signs of nerves as they took control with two goals in a dominant first-half spell from top scorer Higuain and Jose Callejon.

Torino regrouped for the second half and pulled a goal back through Bruno Peres' chip, but could not conjure an equaliser.

Napoli again went two points clear of Roma, and in the driving seat for automatic Champions League qualification, heading into the final match at Frosinone, whose defeat by Sassuolo earlier on Sunday confirmed their relegation.

Luca Toni signed off from Serie A in style with a Panenka penalty as relegated Hellas Verona beat champions Juventus 2-1 at Nuovo Bentegodi.

The veteran forward marked his 344th and last Serie A match with a confident spot-kick finish at the end of the first half, and midfielder Federico Viviani doubled the hosts' lead on 55 minutes.

Juventus, who had already wrapped up the Scudetto and with the Coppa Italia final in mind played goalkeeper Norberto Neto, were reduced to 10 men in stoppage time when Alex Sandro was sent off.

However, there was still time for the champions to net a consolation penalty through Paulo Dybala, as the Bianconeri lost in the league for the first time since the end of October.

Radja Nainggolan further enhanced his growing reputation as hot transfer property in Europe by firing Roma to a 3-0 victory over Chievo.

The Belgian midfielder, who is reportedly interesting Chelsea and Manchester United, put Roma into the lead midway through the first half before Antonio Rudiger doubled up six minutes before half-time. Miralem Pjanic rounded off a 3-0 win with five minutes remaining.

With rumours swirling that Nainggolan is poised to make a summer switch to the Premier League, it was fitting that the playmaker stole the show at the Stadio Olimpico, thus putting himself firmly in the shop window.

Frosinone were relegated after just one season in the top flight thanks to Matteo Politano's late goal in a 1-0 victory for Sassuolo.

Sassuolo substitute Politano's 85th-minute strike ensured an instant return to the second tier for Roberto Stellone's Frosinone side, whose maiden campaign at this level will end at Napoli next weekend.

Sassuolo, meanwhile, are back in sixth place, ahead of AC Milan and are still in with a chance of Europa League football.

Jerry Mbakogu missed two penalties as Carpi slipped into the drop zone after losing 3-1 to nine-man Lazio.

Had the Nigerian converted both first-half spot-kicks, last year's Serie B champions could have resisted an ill-disciplined Lazio side and held on to 17th place.

But Milan Bisevac, Antonio Candreva and Miroslav Klose scythed through a disheartened home defence to render the late red cards for Lucas Biglia and Filip Djordjevic -- and a late strike from the unfortunate Mbakogu -- redundant at the Stadio Alberto Braglia.

Fabrizio Castori's men must beat Udinese next weekend to stand any chance of surviving.

Palermo crept out of the relegation zone by grinding out a barely deserved point from a 0-0 draw at Fiorentina.

Davide Ballardini's men were level on points with 17th-placed Carpi heading into Sunday's game at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, and a share of the spoils helped Palermo escape the bottom three ahead of their final-day showdown with Hellas Verona.

Udinese banished any lingering relegation fears by securing a 1-1 draw with Atalanta in Bergamo.

It would have taken a series of adverse results elsewhere to suck the Bianconeri into a final-day battle against the drop, but Udinese will take no pride in waiting until the penultimate game of the Serie A season to secure their top-flight status.

Duvan Zapata got the visitors off to a fine start with his 10th-minute finish beyond Marco Sportiello, but nine minutes later Atalanta pegged Udinese back with a goal from Gianpaolo Bellini, who converted a penalty following Danilo's handball.

Suso scored twice as Genoa humbled their Derby della Lanterna rivals Sampdoria 3-0 to reach 10th place.

After Leonardo Pavoletti gave the Grifone an early lead at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, on-loan AC Milan player Suso notched either side of the break to ensure Genoa avenged January's derby defeat to struggling Samp.

Gian Piero Gasperini's men will now hope to cement a top-half finish with a positive result from their final game of the season, against Atalanta next weekend.
