Juventus beat Genoa to set club record but Napoli stay top of Serie A

Ten-man Juventus needed an own goal from Genoa defender Sebastian De Maio to earn a 1-0 win and maintain their pursuit of Serie A leaders Napoli.

The winning goal came in the 30th minute via an unfortunate moment for centre-back De Maio, who turned Juan Cuadrado's cross into his own net to gift Juve the points.

A fine solo run from Cuadrado brought the pacy Colombian into a position to shoot or cross -- his searing drive into the box took a crucial deflection off De Maio before spinning into the Genoa goal.

The Bianconeri's Simone Zaza was dismissed in stoppage time for a rather exuberant challenge on Armando Izzo.

But Juve held out to record a 13th consecutive win in Serie A for the first time in the club's history in a single season.

Despite Juve's hot form, Napoli keep on winning too to prevent them from taking over at the top.

On Wednesday, Gonzalo Higuain's 23rd goal of the season propelled Napoli down a path to securing a 2-0 victory at Lazio.

The in-form Argentine striker made it seven goals from his last five league outings in the first half of Wednesday night's game at the Stadio Olimpico. Higuain combined well with Jose Callejon before tucking the Spaniard's pass underneath Federico Marchetti.

Three minutes later, provider turned goalscorer as Callejon raced on to a high ball forward before deftly lobbing the Lazio keeper.

While Napoli celebrated preserving their two-point advantage over Juve, mid-table Lazio offered little by way of response and watched their seven-match unbeaten run come to an end.

Fiorentina stay third after substitute Mauro Zarate struck three minutes into stoppage time for a 2-1 win over struggling Carpi.

Carpi, down in 18th, were within seconds of extending their unbeaten league run to six games after Kevin Lasagna had cancelled out Borja Valero's early opener.

But Zarate rescued Fiorentina, whose coach Paulo Sousa was sent off for the second successive game, with a curling effort from the edge of the area.

The effort, in the dying seconds from the player who only joined La Viola from West Ham last month, keeps Fiorentina in the Champions League places.

Roberto Mancini's ailing Inter Milan claimed an overdue victory against Chievo Verona -- despite the best efforts of Andrea Seculin.

Mauro Icardi's 48th-minute goal separated the teams at San Siro, but the Nerazzurri might have run riot if not for the heroics of Chievo's goalkeeper.

The 1-0 victory was not enough to lift Inter back into third place but they had not accounted for the Flying Donkeys' debutant keeper Seculin. The 25-year-old made fine saves to stop Eder, Icardi and Geoffrey Kondogbia inside the opening half-hour alone.

Seculin's sheet was finally blotted three minutes after half-time, with Icardi applying the killer touch to the ball amid a goalmouth scramble.

AC Milan closed to within six points of the Champions League places by beating Palermo 2-0 at the Stadio Renzo Barbera.

Goals from Carlos Bacca and M'Baye Niang ensured Sinisa Mihajlovic's men continued their steady rise up the Serie A table, with Roma, Inter Milan and Fiorentina firmly in their sights as they seek an overdue return to Europe's premier club competition.

Bacca, who was also on target at San Siro on Sunday, made the breakthrough in the 19th minute as Ignazio Abate's low cross met him for an easy tap-in.

The Rossoneri toiled fruitlessly for a while before being handed the chance to double their lead shortly after the half-hour mark. Edoardo Goldaniga's handball conceded a penalty and French winger Niang made no mistake from the spot.

Andrea Belotti struck deep into added time as Torino fought back from behind twice to draw 2-2 with struggling Sampdoria.

Belotti bagged his second of the game four minutes into stoppage time to deny Samp a first Serie A home win of 2016.

The hosts, who had lost their last four, took the lead in the 66th minute when Luis Muriel headed in Dodo's cross.

Belotti equalised five minutes later with a simple tap in after Andrea Ranocchia missed his attempted front-post clearance.

It appeared the hosts were heading for victory when Roberto Soriano curled in from the edge of the area with six minutes left. But Belotti returned at the death to head in Ciro Immobile's cross.

Manuel Pucciarelli scored a late leveller to earn Empoli a point in a 1-1 draw with Udinese.

The visitors broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute when Duvan Zapata got on the end of Ryder Matos' cross to fire past Empoli shot-stopper Lukasz Skorupski from the middle of the box.

Empoli continued to push and they finally got an equaliser in the 90th minute when Pucciarelli found the back of the net after good link-up play with veteran forward Massimo Maccarone.

Federico Dionisi came off the bench to fire Frosinone to a 1-0 victory over 10-man Bologna at the Stadio Matusa.

Dionisi's seventh goal of the Serie A season leaves Frosinone now four points from safety in 19th.

Bologna were reduced to 10 men in the 64th minute as defender Marios Oikonomou was sent off for a second bookable offence.

The Canarini made the most of their numerical advantage, winning a penalty after 77 minutes when Paolo Sammarco was tripped by Luca Rossettini. Dionisi made no mistake as he slotted home from the spot to give the hosts all three points.

Hellas Verona earned their first win of the season after coming from a goal behind to claim a 2-1 victory over 10-man Atalanta.

Andrea Conti put the visitors ahead but Luca Siligardi equalised just before the break. Boukary Drame was sent off for a second bookable offence before Giampaolo Pazzini popped up to score the winner in 83rd minute to give Verona a morale-boosting win at the Stadio Bentegodi.
