Roma and Napoli bosses play down chances of Serie A title success

Neither Roma nor Napoli want to be considered favourites to win Serie A after moving into first and second place respectively.

A 2-1 win at Fiorentina saw the Giallorossi climb above their hosts and go two points clear at the summit.

When asked who are most likely to win the title, coach Rudi Garcia told his club's website: "Not Roma. Not so long ago we were all rubbish, from the players to the coach and even the sporting director.

"We can't be favourites now just because we're in first place. We just keep doing our job and right now we're first after a quarter of the season. I don't need to tell my players they need to keep their feet on the ground.

"I want to thank the fans that were here tonight, we need them at the Olimpico too because we can't achieve big things without them. We believe in ourselves if we stick together and show humility, but there's a long way to go."

Napoli, who are second but level on points with Fiorentina, Inter and Lazio, are not entertaining the idea of being one of the frontrunners either.

"For me, the word Scudetto is still a swearword," coach Maurizio Sarri said. "You can use that word to describe Roma if you want because they're top.

"All we're thinking about is Wednesday and if anybody thinks any differently, then they shouldn't even think of setting foot in our dressing room."

Gonzalo Higuain, who has looked refreshed and revived under Sarri this season in scoring seven goals in nine Serie A games, praised the coach after the 1-0 win at Chievo Verona.

"Sarri's given us a lot -- he's given us serenity and it's thanks to him that we're the way we are," Higuain told Mediaset. "I'm happy because this was a difficult game and we've struggled to do well here in recent years.

"We were fantastic and we deserved this win. This is a message to ourselves, not to the rest of the league. We're just looking at ourselves, not the others."

On Wednesday, Napoli host Palermo while Roma entertain Udinese in the next round of matches, for which Sarri feels his side are at a serious disadvantage due to their involvement in the Europa League this season.

"It's going to be another difficult game for us against a side who have had an extra 24 hours to relax [having played on Saturday]," Sarri told Mediaset television. "When you consider also that we are playing in the Europa League, this doesn't seem fair to me.

"There's not been enough attention to this when the fixtures were drawn up, particularly for the sides involved in the Europa League."

While neither of the top two fancy their chances of winning the league, Fiorentina coach Paulo Sousa -- whose side have lost to both Roma and Napoli in the past week -- has given his assessment on who is in the best position.

"Napoli caused us more problems than Roma did," he told Sky Sport Italia. "Both are candidates for the title, but I like my team too. We can still improve, but we were courageous and we just didn't have the minor details on our side, even if we continue to dominate our opponents."
