Serie A: Icardi strike keeps Inter Milan perfect, Juventus get first win

Mauro Icardi's first-half strike proved enough for Inter Milan to maintain their 100 percent start to the new Serie A season with a 1-0 win over Chievo in Verona.

But Roberto Mancini's men were fortunate to emerge with the points after finding themselves largely on the back foot against their impressive hosts.

Valter Birsa screwed a free-kick inches over the bar in the 33rd minute before Icardi opened the scoring against the run of play when he flicked home in a crowded box.

Chievo started the game in second place after going unbeaten through their first three games and coach Rolando Maran will take plenty of encouragement despite the defeat.

Roma twice came from behind to snatch a point against Sassuolo in an entertaining 2-2 draw at the Stadio Olimpico.

Giallorosso captain Francesco Totti cancelled out Gregoire Defrel's opener in the 36th minute for his 300th goal for the club.

After Mateo Politano put Sassuolo back in front in the 44th minute, Roma pulled level with a left-footed volley from Mohamed Salah four minutes after the restart.

Though neither side found a winner, both remained unbeaten this season in Serie A.

Juventus picked up their first Serie A victory of the season with a 2-0 triumph at 10-man Genoa.

The visitors were fortunate to break the deadlock in the 37th minute when Paul Pogba's close-range strike hit the crossbar and the ball bounced off Genoa goalkeeper Eugenio Lamanna and went in.

Genoa suffered a further blow six minutes later when defender Armando Izzo was sent off for a second yellow card. Pogba then doubled Juve's lead from the penalty spot on the hour after Genoa's Diogo Figueiras brought down Giorgio Chiellini in the box.

The home side failed to test Juve goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon throughout the encounter and suffered their third loss of the campaign.

Gonzalo Higuain scored twice as Napoli ran riot against Lazio to clinch their first win of the season with a resounding 5-0 scoreline.

The Argentinian forward put Napoli on their way in the 14th minute before Allan doubled the advantage in the 35th minute.

Lorenzo Insigne made it 3-0 shortly after the restart before Higuain added his second before the hour.

Substitute Manolo Gabbiadini struck his team's fifth 11 minutes from time.

Khouma Babacar scored for the second straight Italian league game to hand Fiorentina a 1-0 triumph at newcomers Carpi.

The Senegalese striker, who had scored the winner against Genoa last weekend, struck the only goal of the game in the 35th minute.

Manuel Pasqual fed Babacar in the box and his first attempt was blocked but he tapped in the rebound to beat Carpi goalkeeper Francesco Benussi.

Fiorentina, who went into the contest on the back of a 2-1 home loss to Basel in Thursday's Europa League Group I opener, held on for their third win of the campaign to climb to third in the standings.

Carpi have just one point from their opening four games.

Fabio Quagliarella scored twice in the opening half to put Torino on their way to a 2-0 victory over Sampdoria in a battle of unbeatens.

In the 17th minute, Quagliarella headed in from close range Bruno Peres' cross to beat Sampdoria goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano.

The Italian veteran forward doubled the advantage seven minutes later when he tapped in Andrea Belotti's pass following a corner.

Elsewhere, Bologna beat Frosinone 1-0 with a first-half goal from French forward Anthony Mounier in a matchup of two promoted clubs.

New York lawyer Joe Tacopina attended the match to bid fans goodbye, having announced earlier that he was resigning as Bologna president after just 11 months in charge due to a rift with Canadian investor Joey Saputo.

Also, Eros Pisano scored an injury-time equaliser after Maximiliano Moralez's 89th minute strike as 10-man Hellas Verona drew 1-1 at Atalanta. Star striker Luca Toni was taken off with an apparent left knee injury in the first half.
