Sinisa Mihajlovic suggests Milan derby charity donations to support refugees

Sinisa Mihajlovic has proposed that AC Milan and Inter Milan start a new tradition in which the derby winner would donate money to charity.

Writing in a column in Friday's La Gazzetta dello Sport ahead of Sunday's meeting between the two clubs, Milan boss Mihajlovic suggested that the victors of each Derby della Madonnina make a donation to a charity chosen by both clubs.

Mihajlovic, 46, urged opposite number Roberto Mancini to back his proposal and said that, for this weekend's game, he would like to see the funds go towards tackling the refugee crisis.

"There is a drama that has existed for many years and has become even more pressing in recent days: refugees," the Serb wrote. "Men, women, children, a multitude of desperate people who are fleeing from war, genocide, famine or from poverty.

"It's a problem that is particularly close to my heart because I have seen them with my own eyes and experienced it in my own country, when civil war tore through the ex-Yugoslavia.

"Even my parents and many friends of mine were refugees escaping a war. They were fortunate, in that tragedy, to have a son or a friend who was able to help them, take them in or move them on.

"I helped, as much as I possibly could, so many people who I had never even met before, and I do not remember their names anymore, but I can certainly remember the look in their eyes and the suffering which was painted on their faces.

"Those eyes told a thousand words. Almost all those who are fleeing and are seeking refuge are doing so because they are desperate. They may be uprooting entire families, and for adult men and women it is not easy to rebuild your life when you are 50 or 60.

"I don't want to open a debate -- I am just a football coach. But I know that there are associations in Milan that deal with helping those who are living these dramas today and are searching for refuge. I am going to select one of them. This is a chance for us publicly to give an extra hand, in addition to what we are already doing privately.

"Who wins the derby will pay. Mancio [Mancini], are you in?"

Mihajlovic, who had previously been Mancini's assistant at Inter, said he would like the clubs to give something back to the Lombardy city.

"I feel like I am a very lucky person," he added. "My dreams came true. I consider it a great privilege to be able to play a derby in this city, first as a player and now as a coach. It's an honour and that is something I will be telling my players on Sunday too.

"That is why I thought it would be nice, given how I've had this privilege, to be able to give something back to this city, something symbolic [...] and help those who, in this city, are not as fortunate as we are.

"This is a 'challenge from the heart' that I am launching to somebody who, like me, has been given a lot by Milan -- my friend and rival on two occasions this year, Roberto Mancini."
