AC Milan edge Inter, Sassuolo to win preseason Trofeo TIM

AC Milan won the Trofeo TIM on Wednesday after winning half-games against Inter and Sassuolo.

The three teams each played one half against the others and Milan secured the trophy by defeating Sassuolo 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Earlier, Milan opened the event with a 2-1 win over rivals Inter with goals from new signings Andrea Bertolacci and Carlos Bacca.

Milan held on despite Marcelo Brozovic pulling one back for Inter and defender Alex being sent off for taking down Mauro Icardi.

Sassuolo then defeated Inter 1-0 thanks to Gregoire Defrel's goal, meaning the final half between Milan and Sassuolo would decide the event's winner.

Alfred Duncan provided an early lead for Sassuolo, who were moments away from claiming the trophy before Antonio Nocerino curled in an equaliser in stoppage time, then scored the decisive penalty in a shootout.

Inter manager Roberto Mancini said his side needed to react better after losing both of their halves.

"When you concede goals it's because you've lost a bit of focus -- that's natural," Mancini said. We needed to be more reactive.

But Mancini said he wasn't concerned the bad day would affect his team when Serie A began.

"You can't be disappointed with summer friendlies," he said. "I know there are only 10 days until the start of the season, but that's the same for all teams, not just us. What happens here, stays here. The transfer market? I'm confident, about lots of things!

"I'm not worried about anything, we've only lost the Trofeo TIM. We had a big blow early on against AC Milan and conceded two goals from mistakes. We improved after that, but it didn't change the result. We'll work harder to raise the tempo of our game."
