Wojciech Szczesny glad to get first Roma appearance under his belt

Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny said he had enjoyed his first appearance for Roma despite his side falling to a 2-0 friendly defeat at Sporting Lisbon.

Szczesny, on loan at the Serie A club from Arsenal for the season, played the second half with Roma's official website reporting that he made "a number of good saves."

The 25-year-old, who arrived at his new club on Wednesday, said: "It's good to have my first game under the belt. It was a good experience.

"I've had a really good week of training with the boys -- there's a fantastic group of players here.

"Obviously we must set the standard higher for ourselves because, when you play for a big club, there are no friendly games and you have to win. So the result was really bad."

Szczesny praised coach Rudi Garcia, saying he was "a good guy with a great personality" and said he and his new defensive colleagues "try to talk to each other every day in training in order to learn our game and get to know each other."

And the Poland international revealed that he was taking Italian lessons and was "making progress," adding: "If you give us a few weeks, the connection and the understanding between us will be good."
