Serie A changes start with Sinisa Mihajlovic Sampdoria exit

Sinisa Mihajlovic and Maurizio Sarri are set to get the coaching merry-go-round in Italy revolving after the former left Sampdoria and the Empoli coach hinted he may also be moving on this summer.

Udinese will also let head coach Andrea Stramaccioni leave the club after just one year when his contract expires at the end of June.

Rafael Benitez's departure from Napoli and the likelihood of Filippo Inzaghi being replaced at AC Milan mean two high-profile positions need to be filled this summer, and two of the leading candidates for those positions are preparing to throw their hats into the ring.

Mihajlovic announced on Monday that he had decided to leave Sampdoria, posting a letter on the Genovese club's website explaining his decision to say goodbye.

"Dear Blucerchiati fans, the most difficult moment has arrived. The moment to bid farewell," Mihajlovic wrote. "These are my final words as coach of Sampdoria. My adventure ends here. And I want to take advantage of this opportunity to say goodbye to everybody and explain the reasons behind my decision to leave.

"I took over this side on November 21, 2013 in a very difficult situation, at the bottom of the table, with no belief and in a situation of crisis. I now leave them seventh after even being third at the end of the first half of the season.

"Aside from the league position, I am proud of something else: to leave this side in a position where they have self-confidence, are courageous and capable of facing anybody with their heads held high. I'm leaving a good group of lads, and great footballers who have grown a lot over the past two years.

"Five of them have even been called up to their national teams. Whoever takes my place will find a side with a work ethic which means they know what effort, professionalism and the struggle to give their best in training and games is.

"I am leaving without having another job to go to, or negotiations open with any other club. Anything could happen -- I might even stay at home. But it was my head and my heart which told me it was right to interrupt things here."

Mihajlovic is the leading candidate to replace Benitez at Napoli, while Sarri could be the man to fill his position at the Blucerchiati.

"I'm going to make my mind up in the next three days," Sarri told Sky Sport Italia after his side's 4-3 defeat to Inter. "I'm too tired now. My only worry is that I don't want to have a bad season with Empoli. I'm well liked here and I don't want to ruin what has been a perfect story.

"If somebody really wants me, then I'm interested. If you're not ambitious, then it's impossible to be a coach. But to appoint somebody like me takes courage."

Sarri is not the only candidate for the Sampdoria job with Basel's Paulo Sousa and Walter Zenga in the running. Samp president Massimo Ferrero also said he would consider appointing Parma's Roberto Donadoni, if he were interested.

Stramaccioni, 39, could only guide Udinese to a 16th-placed finish in Serie A, their disappointing campaign ending with a 4-3 defeat at relegated Cagliari on Sunday.

A statement published on Udinese's official website read: "Following a meeting between the board and Stramaccioni, it has been decided that the club will not exercise the option to extend his contract into the 2015-16 season. Therefore our relationship with the coach will come to a natural conclusion on June 30, 2015."
