Lazio set to request postponement of Roma derby after Coppa final change

Lazio are preparing to request the postponement of next weekend's derby against Roma after the final of the Coppa Italia was brought forward by more than two weeks.

After Juventus reached the Champions League final on June 6, the Coppa Italia final in which Juve play Lazio -- originally scheduled for June 7 -- was moved to Wednesday May 20.

FIFA-imposed dates that say players must be released by clubs for national team duty after June 7, and the fact that three matches remain to be played in Serie A, meant no other day was available for the Coppa final.

But Lazio face city rivals Roma in a crucial fixture in the chase for a place in the Champions League just four days later, and feel their rivals would have an advantage so soon after the final.

Security reasons mean the Rome derby can only be played during daylight hours, so it cannot be put back to the evening of May 24.

Corriere della Sport reported that the Biancocelesti were formulating a request for the Lega Serie A to put the fixture back either 24 or 48 hours.

Once the Lega receive Lazio's written request, they will then consult with Roma, who are unlikely to accept it. A final decision would, however, rest with league officials.

Roma are a point clear of Lazio in second place, which would guarantee a spot in the group stage of next season's Champions League.

Third would mean a place in the playoff, and with Napoli -- whom Lazio face on the final day of the season -- only three points behind, that position is still uncertain.

Lazio travel to Sampdoria on Saturday, while Roma host Udinese the following day. The derby is the two clubs' next league fixture.
