Juventus' Beppe Marotta slams Inter Milan as 'Calciopoli' title row escalates

Juventus' general manager Giuseppe Marotta has criticised Inter Milan for their response to what he claims was only a light-hearted remark by his club's president Andrea Agnelli.

During a general assembly of Juventus shareholders last week, Agnelli made a tongue-in-cheek remark about Massimo Moratti's love for the Nerazzurri after the 69-year-old left his role as Inter's honorary president.

"Love leads you to do crazy things, and one of those crazy things was accepting a scudetto they had not won," Agnelli is reported as saying.

The reference was to the 2006 Serie A title, revoked from Juve as part of the Calciopoli scandal and subsequently awarded to Inter.

"Not only are we losing a person who loved his club like very few around, but a great personality. His great love for Inter -- his Inter -- should be recognised because it was a deep love," Agnelli continued, paying tribute to the man who ended a near 20-year direct involvement with Inter late last week.

Inter's response was immediate with a statement published on their official website.

"F.C. Internazionale takes note of the latest attempt by president Agnelli to distort the truth and change the course of history," read the statement.

"Unfortunately for him and for the whole of Italian football, 2006 was a disastrous year in which the scudetto was legitimately awarded to Inter by the FIGC [Italian FA] and Juventus were relegated to Serie B, together with their reputation.

"These are the facts. We will not allow anybody to change or forget them."

According to Marotta, such a stance was "unacceptable", telling RAI television: "President Andrea Agnelli expressed words of great appreciation for the businessman Massimo Moratti.

"Then, with irony, he said how the excessive love for Inter had led them to accept a scudetto they had not won on the field of play. The statement from Inter, and its harshness, was out of order and inopportune."

Relations between two of Italy's great rivals have deteriorated ever since the 2006 match manipulation scandal which saw Juve punished more than any other club and Inter not suspected of any involvement.

Juve continue to insist that they have won 32 Serie A titles, even if they have officially only won 30, two of them taken away from them for malpractice in 2005 and 2006. Inter went on to win the next four Serie A titles, but 2006 remains the source of much contention.
