Rafa Benitez: Napoli need to find response to adversity

Napoli coach Rafael Benitez has said both he and his players must learn their lessons from the 1-0 home defeat to Chievo Verona on Sunday.

Gonzalo Higuain saw a penalty saved as Napoli struggled against one of Serie A's smallest clubs -- the kind of opponents they know they need to beat if they are to challenge for the title.

"It's hard to explain a defeat like this one," Benitez told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "We just lacked a goal.

"We need to learn to respond when we fall behind, and understand also why we've gone behind. We need to work out why one negative incident can have such an effect on the team."

However, he stressed that he was not unduly concerned about his side's stuttering start to the season, which also saw them eliminated from the Champions League after a playoff defeat to Athletic Bilbao.

"It would be a problem if we weren't creating chances, but we are creating them," he said. "The problem is that we're not scoring goals. We need to carry on with the same intensity and faith we had in the first half.

"After Higuain missed the penalty, he didn't have any more clear-cut chances. It's hard to say whether he suffered psychologically as a result of it, but a mistake should be a stimulus to do better.

"[Jose] Callejon, [Lorenzo] Insigne and [Dries] Mertens are all players who can make the difference in the one against one. Our problem is not in attack."
