The Germany international told the club's official website he is "very happy to be part of a big project, and I have a very important role to play in this project."

Part one of that project will be to help steer the Biancocelesti into the Europa League once again next season.

With three games of the Serie A season remaining, Lazio are level on points with sixth-placed Torino, who occupy the final qualification berth for next season's Europa League.

Klose, 35, joined Lazio in 2011 when his contract with Bayern Munich expired. He has scored a total of 40 goals for the club, including seven this season, though injuries have restricted him to just 22 Serie A appearances this term.

He has featured 14 times in the Europa League for Lazio, scoring five goals having previously netted the same number of goals in 12 games for Bayern in the competition.

Klose is on course to break Gerd Mueller's all-time Germany national team goalscoring record at this summer's World Cup, where it is expected he will lead the attack for Joachim Loew's men in Brazil. Like Mueller, Klose has now scored 68 times for his country.
