Mazzarri: I'm the first to question myself

Inter Milan coach Walter Mazzarri says he puts himself under far more pressure than anybody else after being warned by club president Erick Thohir that he, like everyone else at the club, is under constant scrutiny.

Thohir praised Mazzarri for the work he has done so far this season but said he could give no guarantees for his future. He, like all players and staff -- including his appointed advisor Michael Williamson -- will be judged on their performance.

“I’m pleased that the president appreciates my work, and I thank him for it,” Mazzarri said at a presentation of his autobiography in Milan. “Anybody who knows me will know that I always feel under examination but that I am the first person to examine myself, right from my first day as coach of Acireale.

“I’m pleased that we agree on the project and, to be able to plan the future together, we need to finish off this year as well as we possibly can. The future will be planned based on this.

“I never said that I doubted my future, but that I will have to talk about it with the club. One result doesn’t change the overall balance of somebody’s work and the club evaluates what a coach does in the easier as well as the more difficult times.”

That one result, a 2-1 defeat at home to Atalanta, had raised doubts about Mazzarri’s future, with Thohir warning that it must not be repeated if they are to succeed in clinching a berth in Europe next season. Once again, Mazzarri was his own biggest critic.

“I’m a bit angry with how our last game went,” the 52-year-old said. “We tried to win it to the very end and our only disappointment is that we’ve left some points by the wayside. We’ve not got all the points that we’ve deserved this season, but our mentality is improving, and we’re taking the right approach.

“We may not be scoring as many goals as we should be and this could be down to the pressure on the players, but the important thing is that we’re creating more chances than anybody else and this is something we can build on, also for next year.”
