Walter Mazzarri calls on fans' support

Inter Milan coach Walter Mazzarri says the club's supporters are hindering rather than helping the Nerazzurri by not getting behind the team.

Wilson: Rudderless Inter off target again

Inter could fall as low as eighth in Serie A before they face league leaders Juventus on Sunday, and Mazzarri feels his side's lack of support is not helping at a time when they need their fans more than ever.

Speaking after a 0-0 draw against Catania at the weekend -- the club’s fifth draw in their last nine matches, of which they have won only one -- the Inter boss said the lack of atmosphere at the San Siro was contributing to the team’s decline.

"Many of our players aren't used to certain pressure," he said at a news conference. "Unfortunately today there was not much enthusiasm from the stands -- it seemed like we were playing behind closed doors.

"Of course the players have to give a lot more, but that turning point is never arriving; we're not scoring goals when we should be. When the fans were a bit more enthusiastic, we did a little bit more. We're suffering particularly at home and we're playing with the handbrake on a little.

"We're not relaxed and we're making mistakes. Fortunately, despite all this, we're still fifth and we'll try to defend our position."

Inter president Erick Thohir, who had flown in from Indonesia at the end of a turbulent week, left the stadium without commenting.

The Nerazzurri have won only one game since Thohir assumed control from Massimo Moratti, while the transfer saga involving Fredy Guarin and Mirko Vucinic has dented his reputation among the supporters.

"It wasn't only the fans who stopped that swap," Mazzarri said in La Stampa. "It was down to a series of last-minute evaluations. The club knows what needs to be done between now and the end of the month, but unfortunately we can't do transfers like [Samuel] Eto'o anymore.

"We have eight players whose contracts are up for renewal and we're heavily reducing our wage bill. I still see the lads very motivated so I don't see any reason why I should leave."
