Sulley Muntari given three-match ban

AC Milan will be deprived of midfielder Sulley Muntari for three matches after he aimed a punch at Inter Milan's Zdravko Kuzmanovic during Sunday’s derby.

Muntari let his frustration get the better of him at the end of Sunday night's Derby della Madonnina, which Inter won 1-0.

The red card for violent conduct carries at least a two-game suspension, but the gravity of the incident, and his role as a repeat offender, has seen the former Nerazzurro banned an additional game.

As a result, Muntari will miss Milan’s first game of 2014, against Atalanta on Jan. 6, and their subsequent games with Sassuolo and Hellas Verona.

For the Ghana international, it was an 11th red card in 232 Serie A matches. He has been dismissed directly eight times, earning a second yellow card on three occasions.

Four of those red cards came in 140 appearances for Udinese, the club where he started his career before moving to Portsmouth in 2007. He was sent off twice in 97 games for Inter and has now been dismissed twice for his current employers.

Fortunately for Milan's under-fire coach Massimiliano Allegri, he will have captain Riccardo Montolivo back from suspension for the visit of Atalanta to the San Siro. Milan ended 2013 just five points above the relegation zone in Serie A and 27 points from the summit.
