Fiorentina appeal Cuadrado suspension

Fiorentina have lodged an appeal against the second yellow card shown to Juan Cuadrado in Wednesday night’s 2-1 defeat to Napoli in a bid to have the player available for the trip to AC Milan this weekend.

Cuadrado was dismissed in the first minute of stoppage time for simulation inside the penalty area.

A red card for two bookings carries an automatic one-game ban, but the Viola are keen for that to be overturned and have asked the Italian FA (FIGC) to review video evidence of the incident. Replays show that Fiorentina were unlucky not to have been given a penalty when Cuadrado went down inside the penalty area under the challenge of Gokhan Inler.

“Fiorentina have presented an appeal against the suspension for two yellow cards for Juan Guillermo Cuadrado for simulation during the match between Fiorentina and Napoli yesterday,” a statement on the Serie A club’s website read. “We are requesting that television evidence be viewed to cancel the sanction.”

Although Fiorentina will not get the chance to level the match, they hope Cuadrado’s image will be restored and not be tainted as a result of his two bookings for diving.

“The television images are blatant,” the statement continued. “It shows the honesty of our player, recognised by everybody as a professional, and who does not come into the category of a diver, adhering to the values of a club, which transmits fair play and correctness to all of its players.”

Should the Viola’s appeal be successful, Cuadrado, a key player for the club so far this season, will be available for the trip to the San Siro on Saturday night.
