Andrea Poli set for Milan full-back role

Andrea Poli could find himself in the uncustomary role of full-back when AC Milan travel to face Torino on Saturday night after Mattia De Sciglio underwent surgery on his knee.

Mattia De Sciglio: The hype is in full flow
Di Sciglio is expected to be out for up to a month.

Paul: Injuries thwart progress

With Ignazio Abate also currently sidelined for at least another week, losing the Italy international for what is likely to be a month following an operation on his meniscus means Massimiliano Allegri must improvise.

Although the Milan coach has Kevin Constant and Urby Emanuelson at his disposal, club vice-president Adriano Galliani suggests former Sampdoria central midfielder Poli should be given a try instead.

“We’re unlucky and whenever we get hit, it always happens in the very same position,” Galliani said. “Now it’s the turn of our full-backs, but we have decent replacements, like Poli, who is a midfielder but he has already shown that he can play in that position too.”

Poli, who was used as a full-back in a few pre-season friendlies, may be required to fill in for more than just Saturday night with Milan now facing their first congested period of fixtures this season. Next week, they launch their Champions League campaign against Celtic, without both De Sciglio and Abate, before hosting Napoli, travelling to Bologna in a midweek Serie A fixture and then entertaining Sampdoria before facing Ajax.

Fellow defenders Mathias Silvestre and Daniele Bonera are also currently spending more time on the treatment table than out on the field and they are also not going to be options for several weeks, leaving Allegri short of options in defence.
