Zanetti: Inter should be challenging

Inter Milan need to be challenging for the Serie A title again this season, according to captain Javier Zanetti.

Champions Cup: Inter beat Juve

After finishing ninth last season, and missing out on European football, Zanetti believes the Nerazzurri have a duty to get back to where they belong, challenging for silverware under new coach Walter Mazzarri.

“I’m expecting a competitive Inter,” he told Inter Channel. “In a certain sense, it’s going to be an advantage not to be playing (in Europe) during the week so we can work hard between one game and another.

“We are obliged to return to the tip. Inter are a club who should be challenging for major honours.”

Zanetti holds the record for consecutive appearances in Serie A, playing 137 games without interruption up to 2010, while he has made over 600 appearances for Inter in a career including over 1,000 competitive matches.

However, the former Argentina international, who turns 40 this coming Saturday, will be unable to assist his team-mates for much of the campaign having ruptured his Achilles tendon towards the end of last season.

“I’m following my own recovery regime and there’s not too long to go,” he said. “It’s strange for me to see my team-mates training and not to be able to join them, but I’m thinking about recovering as well as I can, then I will be with them.

“The coach knows that I can lend a hand, even if I’m on the sidelines. I want to be close to my team-mates and help them in every way possible.”
