Inter Milan announce swoop for quintet
Inter Milan director Marco Fassone has confirmed that the club have already signed five players for next season, with Diego Laxalt, Hugo Campagnaro, Marco Andreolli, Ruben Botta and Mauro Icardi all set to arrive at the San Siro this summer.
Icardi, 20, joins the Nerazzurri from Sampdoria, where the former Barcelona youth-team forward has scored nine goals in his debut season.
Fellow Argentine Botta is currently plying his trade for Tigre but is relishing the opportunity to move to Serie A, telling Corriere dello Sport earlier this month: "I am very happy to have the chance to play in one of the most important teams in the world.
"It is an honour for me to have the chance to wear the Inter shirt and play alongside players like Javier Zanetti, Esteban Cambiasso, Diego Milito and others."
Completing a trio of Argentine arrivals, the free-transfer signing of Napoli defender Campagnaro will reinforce Inter’s backline, while Chievo centre-back Andreolli - a player who originally left Inter for Roma in 2007 as part of the deal that brought Christian Chivu to the club - will also add some defensive steel.
Finally, Uruguay Under-20 winger Laxalt will move after catching the eye for hometown club Defensor and for his country at the South American Under-20 Championship earlier this year.
Fassone announced the captures, most of which had been mooted for some time, saying: “Our finances don’t allow us to spend crazy money right now. But we have concluded five interesting signings for next season - Laxalt, Campagnaro, Andreolli, Botta and Icardi.”
Inter are expected to sell some players ahead of the new season, but Fassone insisted that goalkeeper Samir Handanovic would not be one of them, in the wake of speculation that Barcelona want him as a replacement for Victor Valdes.
“I wouldn’t rob the squad of a champion like Handanovic, but the president will decide,” Fassone said. “Anyhow, there is no official offer.”
