Palermo snap up Boselli

Palermo have boosted their chances of survival after announcing the signing of Wigan striker Mauro Boselli on loan.

The Rosanero have been one of Serie A’s most active sides during the current transfer window as they seek to improve after struggling during the first part of the campaign. They have recorded just three wins and are four points from safety, in 19th place in the league.

Boselli, 27, arrives from the Premier League club after struggling to make an impression in England, following his arrival for a club-record fee of £6.5 million from Estudiantes in 2010.

The Argentina international has scored four times this season, all in the cups, with the most recent deciding Wigan’s FA Cup replay against Bournemouth. He came off the bench in Saturday’s 3-2 league defeat to Sunderland but manager Roberto Martinez has decided he can do without the former Boca Juniors forward for the remainder of the campaign.

Martinez has bolstered his strike force in the January transfer window with the loan signing of Manchester United’s Angelo Henriquez, who scored on his Premier League debut against Sunderland.

Boselli - leaving the Latics on loan for the third time - returns to the peninsula after a short spell with Genoa back in 2011, during which he scored twice in seven appearances. Palermo have an option to sign the player on a permanent deal when the player’s loan expires in June.

Palermo should also complete the signing of goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino from Chievo this week after the Verona-based club announced a €4 million deal for the 33-year-old has finally been agreed. The former Lazio and Juventus youth product should land in Sicily for a medical on Thursday.
