Coppa Italia: Cagliari escape Modena on penalties

Cagliari put their disappointing league form to one side to claim a dramatic victory over Modena in a Coppa Italia fourth-round tie that went to penalties.

The Sardinian outfit, who have not won in five Serie A matches, won through 5-4 on spot-kicks after the match had finished 4-4 following extra time -- with the top-flight side needing last-gasp equalisers at both the end of normal time and the additional periods to avoid exiting the competition.

Daniele Conti (59, penalty), Samuele Longo (90 and 101) and Diego Farias (119) were on the mark for Cagliari, with second-division Modena's efforts coming from an Alessio Cragno own goal (six), Davide Luppi (68), Pablo Granoche (98 and 109, pen).

Thursday's other fourth-round clash was far more straightforward, with Sampdoria beating Brescia 2-0.

Manolo Gabbiadini opened the scoring with a 33rd-minute penalty, and Gonzalo Bergessio doubled the lead just before the hour mark.
