Africa's footballers shine across Europe in October women's rankings

Inter Milan's Tabitha Chawinga tops the pile yet again in October's African Women's Power Rankings, after a productive month for attacking players from across Africa.

In addition to Malawi, this month's top 10 features players from Zambia, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, South Africa and Cameroon.

1. Tabitha Chawinga, Inter Milan

Chawinga, who joined Inter Milan from China's Wuhan Jiangda in August, continues to play a leading role in their title bid.

The Malawi star was on target in the 4-0 derby win over AC Milan, as well as the 1-1 draw with Sassuolo.

In six league matches this season, Chawinga has scored six goals -- the joint third-most in Serie A -- and amassed joint-chart topping four assists.

This comes off the back of a superb run of form for Wuhan, from whom she joined on a season-long loan. Chawinga has been quoted by the Daily Times as saying that she hopes to stay at Inter beyond the end of her loan agreement.

2. Racheal Kundananji, Madrid CFF

Zambia's Kundananji joined Madrid after an impressive end to last season with Eibar and wasted no time in getting off the mark for her new club in September, netting twice against Levante Las Planas.

She has now followed that up with three more Primera Iberdrola goals -- another brace in the 4-0 win over Real Betis and a goal in the 2-0 triumph over Granadilla Tenerife.

At the time of writing, Madrid are fourth in the league with 13 points from six games. Every team bar leaders Barcelona looks beatable for them and 22-year-old Kundananji is a major part of the reason why.

3. Rasheedat Ajibade, Atlético Madrid

Ajibade put in a star performance for Atléti in their 5-0 win over Sporting de Huelva, scoring four goals including three in the second half. The other goal was scored by Ludmila from the penalty spot.

The Super Falcons forward might feel hard done by after such a stunning performance not to be higher up the rankings, but the four goals in that game were her only strikes in October, so Chawinga and Kundananji get in ahead of her this month on the basis of consistency.

Nevertheless, Ajibade, 22, continues to grow year on year and is showing signs of turning into a bona fide star in the near future.

4. Toni Payne, Sevilla

While Chawinga, Kundananji and Ajibade were all in fine goalscoring form in October, Payne is at the peak of her powers as a provider.

The Nigeria winger provided the assist for Cristina Martín-Prieto's first goal in Sevilla's 2-0 win over Alhama and then set up every one of Ana Franco's three strikes in the 5-0 win over Villarreal.

Payne has been one of the most impressive creative players in the Primera Iberdrola this season and when she performs, the team tends to be on top of their game too.

5. Asisat Oshoala, Barcelona

Oshoala was the joint-top goalscorer in the Primera Iberdrola last season but has had a rotten run with injuries over the past year and is slowly working her way back to form.

The Super Falcons star was on the scoresheet twice for Barcelona in their 9-0 UEFA Women's Champions League victory over Benfica. However, she has only started two league games this season and scored once.

Barcelona, who have tremendous strength in depth, are top of the Primera Iberdrola with a perfect six wins out of six.

6. Rosemonde Kouassi, Fleury 91

Kouassi, a 20-year-old Ivory Coast international, continued her superb start to the season by scoring in Fleury 91's 2-1 defeat to Rodez.

She has now scored four goals in five league appearances this season, which is particularly significant given that Fleury are off to a tough start and have only scored seven goals in total. Even when the team is struggling to perform, Kouassi rarely falters.

Clearly a hot prospect, Kouassi is likely to have suitors circling if she keeps up her recent form.

7. Jermaine Seoposenwe, FC Juárez

South Africa's Seoposenwe, who was on target for Banyana Banyana during the WAFCON, continues her steady form in Mexico's Liga MX Femenil.

Seoposenwe scored the first goal in Juárez's 3-0 win over Puebla FC, with her tally for the league season at four goals from nine matches.

8. Ifeoma Onumonu, Gotham FC

Onumonu, who recently inked a new deal in New York, did not have her best season in the NWSL -- and she was far from alone in that respect in a struggling Gotham FC side.

However, the Nigeria international returned to scoring form in October, capitalising on Midge Purce's assist to net Gotham's second goal as they came back from 3-1 down to claim a 3-3 draw with eventual NWSL champions Portland Thorns.

With the World Cup mere months away, it is ideal for Nigeria to have as much depth in the striker position as possible, so Onumonu ending her goal drought is a promising sign.

9. Francisca Ordega, CSKA Moscow

Nigeria's Ordega continues to play an important role upfront for CSKA Moscow and scored twice in their 3-0 win over Rostov on October 1.

CSKA sit second in the race for the championship, three points behind leaders Zenit, and Ordega has seven goals from 22 league matches at the time of writing.

10. Gabrielle Onguéné, CSKA Moscow

Onguéné continues to play her part alongside Ordega upfront for CSKA. She scored against Rostov in another 3-0 win over them on Oct. 29 to take her tally for the season to five goals from 23 games.

Onguéné is chasing a fourth Russian Supreme Division title, having already won the league in 2016 with Rossiyanka and in 2019 and 2020 with CSKA.
