Mauro Icardi urges Inter Milan to maintain form for 2017 Serie A push

Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi has urged his side not to waste their good form when they resume after the winter break.

Inter signed off for Christmas with a fine 3-0 win over Lazio, which was a fifth home success on the bounce and came courtesy of Ever Banega's stunning goal and Icardi's brace.

Stefano Pioli's men are well-placed to make an assault on the top four when the action resumes in 2017, but only if they learn from last year.

"The important thing is that we don't return from the winter break and throw everything away, just as we did last year,'' Icardi told Sky Sport Italia. "I hope we have learned from those mistakes.

"We'll take it one game at a time, keep climbing the table and look forward.''

Icardi's brace continued a sizzling season, taking his tally to 14 goals in 18 Serie A games, but it ended a three-game drought and the 23-year-old admitted he was ready to get back on the scoresheet.

"I'll be honest, I hadn't scored for a couple of games and was missing the feeling of a goal,'' he said. "If the team continues working well, then we'll certainly get good results.''

The game at San Siro was decided in the second half as Inter blitzed Lazio with three goals in 12 minutes.

It was particularly frustrating for Lazio boss Simone Inzaghi as his side missed several early chances.

He told Mediaset Premium: "Unfortunately we were unable to make our performance count with a goal, Inter soaked up pressure and emerged in the long-run.

"A team like ours cannot concede three goals in 12 minutes. After the Ever Banega opener, we didn't react, we were not a team and the match was transformed. We basically left the pitch after that goal.

"Unfortunately we do tend to concede a lot of goals in the second half, 17 out of 20, and need to analyse why that keeps happening.

"We're in a decent position in the table, but can't make the step up in quality if we lose our concentration.

"Lately we do struggle to react once we concede a goal and there are real regrets that we came away empty handed after that first-half performance at San Siro. We seemed to be in control up until that point.''
