Samir Handanovic: Inter no longer great

Inter Milan goalkeeper Samir Handanovic has conceded that the Nerazzurri are no longer a European superpower.

Samir Handanovic has replaced Julio Cesar as Inter Milan's No. 1
Samir Handanovic has been linked with a move to Barcelona this summer.

Handanovic joined Inter last summer from Udinese but endured a frustrating first season at the club as they finished ninth in Serie A.

And the Slovenia international feels that, following last term’s disappointment, the perception of the San Siro side, who have won three European Cups in the past, has now changed.

“Do I ever ask myself why I came here? Never,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport. “Inter were and remain a big club. Goalkeepers are paid to save, not to think.

“We should no longer think of ourselves as the superpower from before. We should not kid ourselves. This is simply the situation as it is, Inter no longer have 11 or more top players like in the days of Roberto Mancini and Jose Mourinho.”

Despite Inter’s poor campaign last season, Handanovic impressed with some solid displays.

Such performances have led to him being linked with a summer move to Barcelona -- something the ‘keeper has dismissed as just speculation.

“If a club really want a player, they get their man and the player is the first to know,” he said. “It was mainly paper talk and I don’t care much about rumours. I want to focus on playing football. I am with Inter now and we will see what the future brings.”
