Diego Milito: Inter making good progress

Diego Milito is working hard on his return to action after tearing cruciate knee ligaments, but from his berth on the sidelines, he can see an Inter Milan side which is heading in the right direction.

• Zanetti: Inter should challenge

Milito was the mastermind of Inter’s treble in 2010, yet he has struggled to regain his best form since firing the Nerazzurri to Champions League glory that year. A serious knee injury picked up last February has set him back further, but he is working hard on his recovery.

When he returns, he wants to slot into a side challenging for silverware once again, and he is buoyed by what he has witnessed so far since Walter Mazzarri took up the reins.

"We’re doing a good job and heading in the right direction," he told Inter Channel. "The coach even asked us, who are recovering from injuries, to follow his tactical work and this helps a lot. Things are progressing well and let’s hope it continues this way.

"As for me, I’m getting there bit by bit. I’m really desperate to get back to 100% after months out and I’m even doing more than planned. I’m working really hard and benefitted a lot from spending time in Pinzolo and the USA."

Milito is due to return in October, although a swifter recovery could see him back in action in September, meaning he may miss only a handful of Serie A matches.

When he does come back, he is likely to have to fight for his place in the side with Ishak Belfodil and Mauro Icardi swelling the ranks of forwards this summer.

"We’ve got a good blend of forwards, experienced and young, but let’s not put too much pressure on the lads," said the 34-year-old. "Icardi and Belfodil are the future of Inter, but I still want to make my contribution.

"I’m confident we can go a long way, as high as possible, and when I pull on an Inter shirt, the aim is always the maximum."
